Thank you for an article that supplies a much needed Reality Check for the United States Healthcare consumer. The opposition to the Health Care Reform Bill was strong before passage and continues to be so in 2011. The most vocal in opposition to Health Care Reform are the Republican Right who have Wall Street investments in Health Care Corporations. From Pharmaceuticals to Surgical Operating Rooms to Insurance Coverage, Wall Street has their fingers in the healthcare pie for profit. Streamlining the Insurance industry into a Universal Single Payer system would allow an analysis into the corrupt profiteering currently plaguing the privatized system we have now.

Me and Micheal were contemplating obtaining a number of solar power panels for our property not too long ago. The only problem was the amount. The most inexpensive solar system we found was close to five thousand dollars. It could have taken us years to recoup that amount of money. Anyway, we happened across these directions for building your own residential solar panels. We ended up going that route. It ended up saving us quite a bit of dollars, and the no cost, natural power is fantastic! :) We run a number of of our kitchen appliances off this grid.

This piece is a strong dose of much needed reality. Political opposition from the right to universal care is prolific and stentorian. The political line most touted during the run up to the passage of the 1020 Healthcare Reform bill was the assertion that America has the best healthcare system in the world -- we need to improve it, not reinvent it. This is blatantly untrue. It seems to me that a couple of things are at the heart of the problem: Medical costs, especially for specialty procedures; the failure of our medical culture to make prevention the centerpiece of healthcare; and the astronomical costs associated with end of life care (the greatest burden on Midicare/ Medicaide comes by far in the last year of life). The expectation that when it comes to medically sustaining life there should be no constraints on treatment offered is easy to endorse and impossible to financially support.

Coming from Australia, I have lived a non-profit model - govt sponsored healthcare. Some of the cons are things like long waiting lists for elective procedures (e.g. 18 mths for a hip replacement) and inadequate facilities in areas where it's underfunded (e.g. a small town, or a dept of a large hospital). I have read anecdotal stories of "patients in beds in the hallways".

In the last decade in Australia, they introduced the private health care option so people could buy an additional layer of service if they wanted to. This enables them to privately seek out and pay for various procedures, like the elective surgeries, at private medical facilities (not the govt run hospitals) and do so without the long wait periods.

I think there is value to offering both layers. I am not a bleeding heart liberal, but I do believe at our core, if we are to consider ourselves a humane society that shows compassion to all our fellow citizens, which I think is more of a moral code than any particular religious leaning, then it is the duty of those that have means to provide for those that don't. I don't know if there are studies and cost models, but I would bet that spending some money (in higher taxes) up front to raise the minimum standard of living for all will save money down the track (with lowered health care premiums that are skyrocketing out of control) for those that pay.

I don't think human care/suffering should be factor in a corporation's profit model. I'm not necessarily an advocate of govt having control either. So, I think some blend that has the concept of "not for profit" at it's core is a good direction to go in.

Keep up the insightful commentary!

Cheers
Rob
